SuperBike Lites Round 3:
This meeting
started out on a sad note with the passing of Ron Newitt during the week.
His memory was honoured by the running of an old SBL tradition that he
enjoyed, the Le Mans start feature race. Entries were by donation to
cancer research and drew a full grid of riders with Sam Heath taking the win
and perpetual trophy.
An awkward
crash during practice on Saturday has Michael Emery recovering in hospital
from a number of broken ribs and back injuries. We all wish him a
speedy recovery and will keep you informed of his progress.
Some excellent
winter weather made for great racing in all classes on Sunday. Newcomer Adam
Rexhouse rode the wheels off the Top Rider VFR in his first road race
meeting and clearly won the Rookie class (2-1-1-1) from Ken Rufus, also
racing a 400 for the first time. Some close racing between Evie and I
ended in tears during the second race. Luckily Evie was able to get her
machine repaired and back out for the remaining races, but mine was too
damaged to continue and will take a good deal of work to get back into shape
- that's racing.
Another pleasing sight
on the weekend was the grid of five junior riders in their own series.
We really need to encourage more junior participation in our sport. If you have an interested junior rider, get along to the cart track at
Willowbank on Friday nights where they can have a taste of road racing in an
expertly supervised and safe environment. E-mail the secretary for more
information.
A big thank you to all the
volunteers who helped out on the weekend and especially the officials who
work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all possible.
I'll try and
fill in more information from the other classes as it comes to mind.
